aftermarket air intakes are available for most cars sold here in the states,don't know about makes and models elsewhere.get a k&n air filter(lifetime warranty) for around $40USD.a MAF sensor
(mass air flow-emissions bullshit) aftermarket depending on vehicle is about $100-$200 USD.
anyone who knows anything about engines will tell you more airflow=better mileage.
a better flowing muffler is a huge help also.
also,check your pcv valve.if you shake it and it rattles,your OK.no rattle,time to replace.if you have a pre 1995 car or truck,bribe a shop to hack off your catalytic converter and replace with straight pipe.the convertors clog up and murder your gas mileage.
if you can't remember when your vehicle had its last tune-up,get one.a basic cap and rotor,plugs and wires tuneup is easy.

haynes inc. and chilton inc. sell books for your car or truck for about $20 with step by step instructions,and pictures of how to do everything you would normally be charged a shitload for by a mechanic.
